1. Flohmarkt
This large fleamarket takes place every week on Petersplatz. Apart from the autumn fair and a few holidays, it is staged every Saturday. Hundreds of people come looking for a bargain when the weather is good. Antiques masquerade as unwanted rubbish, and there a lots of records for vinyl junkies. There are also books, furniture, ornaments, cooking utensils, and much more. There is also a wide range of prices, from ridiculously cheap to unbelievably expensive. It's worth haggling.

1. Bücher-Brocky
100,000 books - more than enough for any bookworm! And every antiquarian paperback is just CHF 1! The best idea is to take a large bag and spend as much time as you can in this readers' paradise. Detectives novels, cookbooks, fiction and poetry, and French and English books are all stocked here, along with much more. The books in the modern antiquarian books, hardbacks, and first editions are all slightly more expensive. You shouldn't come here looking for a specific title. Although you're practically guaranteed to find something - it's mostly unexpected treasures you find - maybe even works by authors you wouldn't consider paying full price for....

2. Schmocki's Ohrwurmoase
Music and comfort come together here. In this small shop, which somewhat resembles a living room, you can relax, sit at the counter or a table, and take a little time deciding what to buy. The walls make no secret of the fact that the owner is a (huge) Beatles fan, but the range of CD's, vinyl, and DVD's are not limited to the four moptops. Most CD's cost CHF 5-15, and listening facilities are available.

3. Flohmarkt & Antiquitäten / Hi Bürgi
Does your flat need that certain little something? A stuffed fox, maybe? If you love the obscure, antiques or junk, then you should pay a visit here. Candle holders large enough to fill a normal flat rub shoulders with porcelain, crystal glasses and kitsch garden gnomes. Friends of the owner sit at the tiny bar and see to it that everyone is always in a good mood, which makes it a pleasure to shop in here.

4. Kangaroo
The 70's are experiencing a renaissance, particularly at Kangaroo, the second hand clothing store. Hideous meets extravagant meets cool here. Garments from other periods are also available. You don't even have to buy anything - it's often enough just to see yourself in a pair of flares - and you're cured from the wish to add such garments from a different age to your wardrobe. It is possible to find nice clothes here - depending on your taste. With a little bit of luck you'll find something from Fifth Avenue or some other mundane area. It's also rumoured that many of Basel trends actually begin in this very shop.

1. Le Marché aux Puces
Experience a typical Genevan local scene, and if you're lucky, you may even come across that rare object you have been seeking for years. Every Wednesday and Saturday at dawn, Plainpalais becomes animated as the vendors set up their stalls for Geneva's traditional fleamarket. The atmosphere is very colourful and passionate - antique collectors mingle with first-time visitors, onlookers, and those who simply seek a good bargain. You can find everything and anything, from valuable collectors' items to totally useless objects, old and new, beautiful and gaudy.

1. Picconi
If you are searching for antiques while visiting Lausanne, then this centrally located and easy to find shop is for you. Once inside the pretty building, the furniture, jewellery and paintings are a little disappointing. However, the few pieces that are on display are attractive, traditional 18th and 19th century designs. The proprietor is somewhat lacking in enthusiasm, but we suppose he would be a mine of information if pressed. This is the place for a quiet look around.
